1. China is inching higher on a list of the world's most competitive economies - to 27th place, up from 29th last year. "China continues to lead the way among large developing economies, improving by 2 more places this year, and solidifying its place among the top 30," said the Global Competitiveness Report 2010-2011, released by the World Economic Forum. Switzerland remained in top spot, followed by Sweden and Singapore. (Shanghai Daily).
2. Container volume growth at Shanghai and Shenzhen ports rose at a double-digit pace to historic highs last month. Shanghai overtook Singapore as the world’s busiest container port in April and Shenzhen displaced Hong Kong as the world’s third-busiest in July. Jim Wong, an analyst at Nomura Holdings, said China port operators will probably beat their container volume growth targets of 10 to 15 per cent for the full year. (SCMP)
3. The credit crunch and growing fears of further measures to cool the property market have not stopped developers from acquiring development sites in major cities. In the past two days, they have spent almost10 billion yuan (HK$11.45 billion) on land acquisitions. China Vanke yesterday teamed up with BUCC Group to buy a residential site in Changping district in Beijing for 1.28 billion yuan, or 6,633 yuan per square metre. The site could provide a gross floor area of 192,967 sq metres. The Greenland Group bought a commercial site in Chaoyang district in Beijing for 2.58 billion yuan, or 7,696 yuan per square metre. KWG Property Holding yesterday made its first foray in Shanghai. The Guangzhou company paid 1.1 billion yuan, or 14,000 yuan per square metre, for a commercial site near the World Expo venue in Pudong district. KWG said two commercial buildings with a gross floor area of 80,000 sq metres would be built on the site. On Wednesday, Wharf (Holdings) paid 4.83 billion yuan, or 35,490 yuan per square metre, for a residential site in Pudong. (SCMP)
